Dato che molti sono curiosi, proverò a descrivere cosa sono andato a fare di così particolare a Firenze. L’idea di fondo è quella di usare un laser in una cavità , ovvero in un oggetto delimitato da due specchi, dove l’energia della luce possa accumularsi. Affinché la luce possa interagire con la cavità , essa deve essere ad una certa frequenza (detta di risonanza) che viene determinata dalle caratteristiche fisiche della cavità , ad esempio la distanza tra i due specchi. Tuttavia la luce, essendo molto intensa, scalda e deforma gli specchi, modificando quindi la risonanza e altre proprietà . Conoscendo la cavità e osservando come cambia la sua risposta in funzione della luce che viene immessa, è possibile studiare cosa succede agli specchi, come si deformano e vibrano. Viceversa, una volta studiati gli specchi, è possibile fare delle misure molto precise su come è fatta la luce, oppure su come varia la lunghezza della cavità (questo molto interessante nel campo di sensori ad alta sensibilità come quelli per cercare le onde gravitazionali).
In questi giorni però al posto dello specchio c’è una lamina, che non riflette un gran che, ma può vibrare: se la luce laser viene modulata, essa va a esercitare come dei piccoli colpi alla lamina (grazie alla pressione di radiazione) fa mettere in moto le oscillazioni proprie dell’oggetto, come i colpi al momento giusto possono far viaggiare un’altalena.
Tutto questo verrà poi applicato a dei nuovi tipi di specchietti MEMS, che dovrebbero essere perfettamente riflettenti, però sufficientemente piccoli da essere messi in movimento da pochi fotoni. Se questo dovesse funzionare, si cercherà da una parte di costruire MEMS ancora più piccoli di quelli che sono stati già costruiti, dall’altra si tenterà di osservare fenomeni al limite dell’odierno limite quantistico di sensibilità .
